This paper presents an assessment of the hotel industry of Cyprus, regarding energy management strategies. Also, based on a literature review on the implementation of energy management systems worldwide, specific solutions for the Cyprus hotel industry have been derived. These produced a number of ideas in pursuance of effective management of energy and thereby reduction of electricity cost, CO2 gas emissions and finally be environmentally friendly. Some of these ideas/measures are based on the use of renewable energy, which includes solar-Thermal systems for hot water production and HVAC, ground-source heat pumps, solar photovoltaics, and biomass. Further, measures related to energy savings are derived, which include smart keycards, thermal insulation, and an integration of heat and power (CHP) with absorption chillers. The above measures could provide hotels with the opportunity to gain a green building energy certification, which would be useful for both reducing costs as well as attracting guests.
