OBJECTIVE To estimate the frequency of depression in patients with chronic renal failure in Cyprus and to explore its correlation with demographic and clinical parameters. METHOD The methodology was based on cross-sectional analysis. Patients with renal failure from Larnaca and Limassol state hospitals were recruited into the study according to specific criteria and data were obtained via structured questionnaires. The estimation of the risk of depression was based on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). RESULTS A high prevalence of depression was detected in this group of patients with chronic renal failure. The risk factors for depression included age and the type of therapy (dialysis or drug treatment only), while no correlation was found with gender or the duration of the disease. CONCLUSIONS Depression constitutes a serious problem in Cypriot patients with chronic renal failure and health measures to counteract this need to be implemented.
